Honours and Graduate Diploma Study

Honours and Graduate Diploma study enables you to consolidate and integrate the results of an undergraduate degree and to clearly indicate to the world your ability to pursue major research projects in academic or professional settings. An appropriate result can lead to entry into Masters by Coursework, Masters by Research or Doctorate of Philosophy study.

Honours and Graduate Diploma study should involve a year of small class advanced coursework, focusing on disciplinary knowledge, problems and methodologies.

Study at Honours level represents the highest level of training in an undergraduate degree within the Australian tertiary education system. It is an optional fourth year of intensive study after the three years of the basic undergraduate degree. Studying Honours provides the satisfaction of advanced study, a close supervision relationship with an academic, the ability to engage in specialised and extended research, and enhanced job opportunities.

Grading of Honours

When you undertake honours your final result will be graded as follows:

  • First-class honours (I): 85% and above
  • Upper second (IIa): 75-84%
  • Lower second (IIb): 65-74%
  • Third (III): 50-64%

Students wishing to pursue Doctoral work should be aware that applications for Australian Postgraduate Awards are considered only once a year, at the end of Semester 2.
